When Derek decided to let loose, he really decided to let loose. Gone is the clean-cut look from his high school days, Derek's let his hair grow out and run highlights through it to make it a nice mixed shade of light and dark browns. He also uses enough styling gel to make a small sculpture on a daily basis. He has surprisingly large eyes that are a warm shade of brown and his facial features are a little on the boyish side, but he makes it work. It's very obvious that he takes after his mother, there's absolutely no trace of Chen appearances in him.

Derek is all about the casual look, which best suits his not-so-tall height of 5'6". Jeans and T-shirts are this guy's best friend, but when it's time for a party, or even better a date, he cleans up pretty damn well with some of the nicer clothes his parents insist he keeps. He also sports a couple of large beaded necklaces around his neck and tends to fiddle with the wooden beads when he's thinking about something.

His PB is Izumo no Takeru from the manga Takeru: Opera Susanoh Sword of the Devil.

You know that guy you see in the college movies, the one that's always partying and drinking and having sex with a girl on his roommate's bed? Yeah, that's Derek. And despite the fact that doing all of these things should have made him a complete asshole, Derek's actually a pretty cool guy who just happens to like having a little (read as a lot) fun. He's nice and friendly and maybe just a little dirty from too many hormones and exposure to the internet, but what can you really expect from a guy who's decided to let it all hang loose?

You'd never guess that this party animal is also one of the biggest engineering nerds around. If it's got wires, he's rewired it to do eight different things, all of which completely unrelated to its original purpose. And while he may rewire things for nefarious purposes, Derek keeps his destruction on a low scale. Can't have the parents finding out what he's up to, after all.

Derek had never known that he was the bastard child of a one night stand between his married mother and a member of the Chen family. All he'd ever known was that his parents were determined, hardworking people, leaving behind the lands of China and coming to America in search of the fabled land of opportunities. As their believed first son born on American soil, Derek was subjected to the typical child raising ideals of traditional Chinese parents. His life was kept under strict control and perfect obediance was expected of him, which he gave like any other parent-fearing child. And for the first part of his life, it worked for him. School was always of the utmost importance and Derek worked hard to keep his perfect grade point average, forgoing the usual luxuries of high school like dating in exchange for volunteering and academic clubs.

Hidden among his honors and advanced classes Derek also took a few classes in mechanics, fascinated by the way machines worked from a young age. However, working with hard metal and shiny bolts just didn't suit the craving he had. He found much more pleasure in the intricate wirings behind the electronics around his house instead. He started fiddling with a good number of circuitry around his house around the third year of high school. By the beginning of his fourth, he knew what he wanted to do in life. Though his parents had been pushing the idea of becoming a doctor or a lawyer on him, Derek had managed to convince them that yes, there was money to be made in the career of an engineer. Thanks to his perfect grades and high school performance, Derek was accepted to Stanford and with his parents' well wishes, left home to start his life as a college student. Boy, did he start it.

Free from academic clubs, volunteer work, and most importantly his parents, Derek became the atypical college party boy, spending every night out with friends and most of the day sleeping away in his dorm room. In his first semester, his grades had slipped down to a C, which upon discovery by his parents, earned him a vicious yelling and the threat to force him into a college closer to home. The threat worked, slightly. In fear of being dragged back home, Derek spent some time devoting himself to his school work, and much to his surprise, found that he didn't need to devote very much time at all. Engineering fascinated him enough to keep his attention and so he found the perfect balance of schoolwork and party life, keeping his grades at their perfect level while still enjoying the freedom he'd finally gotten.

For his third year of college, Derek decided to participate in a foreign exchange program on a whim and found himself in England. Which he rather enjoyed. A lot. So much, in fact, that just a few days before receiving his bachelors at Stanford, he told his parents that he'd applied and had been accepted for a masters degree program at Countshire. Luckily for him, his parents appreciated his enthusiasm for an advanced degree. And also never caught on to just how he'd spent most of his time in college.

Besides turning toasters into mini-robots, Derek has great hearing and can pick up noises from distances further than the average person. It helps him keep those toasters from becoming bombs, in the long run.

At the many parties he goes to, Derek is also the designated DJ and usually earns himself a little side cash at social events.
